Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (ASET)

Customized solutions to meet your technology needs. . .

ASET, a dynamic ITS unit that provides support for Penn State's academic and research community, is comprised of two main areas:

Academic Services (AS)

Activities such as using a Penn State Access Account, sending e-mail, creating Web pages, processing data and accessing up-to-the-minute information have become an increasingly integral part of academic life for students, staff and faculty at the University. Academic Services functions as Penn State's "boiler room" for these services by providing the IT tools, infrastructure, and support Penn State community members need to be successful in their teaching, learning and research endeavors. The AS team is charged with the development, deployment, and management of a wide range of centralized computing services for Penn State including the Penn State Access Account, e-mail, University Park modems, Web space, Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS), the Penn State Portal, Penn State WebMail, file backup, vendor software and distribution support.

This team also provides information and expertise related to the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure program (PACI) and other federal computing programs. Visualization staff members explore and develop new visual computing technologies for research and instructional programs at Penn State and provide computational resources and consulting expertise in the areas of scientific and artistic visualization, geometric and solid modeling, computer animation, and videotape and hardcopy output. AS staff collaborate with faculty and researchers on the innovative applications of these and related advanced technologies to resolve unique computing challenges.

Emerging Technologies (ET)

With the rapid pace of technological change today, it's important for organizations to be light on their feet and more adaptable than just a few years ago. The Emerging Technologies (ET) team helps ITS, and subsequently Penn State, become more agile and flexible in teaching, learning, and research, while simultaneously participating in a range of cutting-edge IT investigations. ET performs research and development in information technology for the purpose of developing, defining, and promoting an information technology architecture that positions the University to take advantage of rapidly emerging opportunities. Additionally, ET helps to promote Penn State's participation in national and international IT research activities, partnering with AS to deploy advanced tools and explore the opportunities that will help accelerate and foster the growth of technology development, and assist faculty, staff, and students with embracing the future of technology at Penn State and beyond.
