Benefits and Examples of Streaming

There are many ways streaming can be used to enrich education. Faculty can use streaming to deliver audio or videotaped instruction to students across great distances. Students developing skills like public speaking can have their presentations videotaped and archived, and use streaming to review their progress. Both faculty and students can use streaming to share sound and moving images outside of class.

In fact, the possibilities are endless.

Below are some linked examples of the innovative ways Penn State faculty and students have used ITS Streaming Services.

On-line Video Tutorial

Using animation and video instruction, Penn State Chemistry faculty created a tutorial that explains the complex process of UV-visible spectroscopy and teaches students how to operate the device that measures it. Streaming the tutorial has saved both faculty and students valuable lab time and resources.

Feedback on Student Performance

At the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, students are videotaped throughout the semester and selected clips are archived on the server. Having access to this on-line database accelerates students' growth by allowing them to review their performances and track their progress.

Scientific Visualizations

Simple animations of molecular dynamics were created to make complex chemical concepts easier to grasp. Streaming allows students to access them outside of class, study them at their own pace, and refer to them as often as they'd like.

Speaker Archives

Information Technology Services keeps a video record of their speakers when possible. These are often synchronized with PowerPoint slides.
